I myself abstain from all strong liquor (except for a few mis-steps of which we shall not speak), and personally regard firewater that smells like burnt tires as an abomination.

But apparently others are not thattaway blessed.
Let this encourage them to mend their ways.
Or at the very least stop funding hairy men in kilts.

Gentlemen,

I would like to preface this letter, in that I have enjoyed your fine whisky products for many years, and believe they are truly world-class. Unfortunately, due to the actions of your esteemed West Dunbartonshire council members, I will not be able to enjoy your whisky in the foreseeable future.

It has come to my attention that the West Dunbartonshire Council claims to have voted unanimously to boycott Israeli products.

The West Dunbartonshire Council clearly states their point on their website, updated on the 30th of May, 2011.

The actual boycott resolution is as follows:

‘This Council deplores the loss of life in Palestine which now numbers well over 1,000. This Council also recognises the disproportionate force used by the IDF in Palestine and agrees to boycott all Israeli goods as a consequence. Officers should immediately cease the purchase of any goods we currently source, which were made or grown in Israel. Officers should also ensure we procure no new goods or produce from Israel until this boycott is formally lifted by WDC.’

I find it disturbing that the esteemed council found no reason to mention the reason for the IDF’s operation in Gaza. There was no mention of the intentional targeting of civilian infants, children, women and men by Gaza’s Hamas government, the thousands of rockets they launched at Israel’s civilian population, and the restraint that Israel employed over the previous years when attacked on a daily basis.

The IDF does not target civilians. The vast majority of Palestinians that Israel killed have been terrorists. Go check the facts. I have. Palestinians terrorists routinely use hospitals, mosques, and schools to launch their rocket attacks on Israel. Try defending your population from terrorists and see if you can guarantee zero collateral damage. Does your council not condemn the barbarism of the Arab terrorist because in the back of their minds they are concerned terrorists might hunt them down and terrorize THEIR families?

Why was there an IDF operation in Gaza in the first place? To oppress poor Palestinian Arabs? How would you deal with Gazas’ Arabs’ targeting Scotland’s babies, other children, and other civilians? Have you not seen the pictures of atrocities the Arabs have visited on innocent children, or does your council not care? We are not talking about isolated attacks on Israel, but about thousands of rockets they have launched at Israel’s civilian population.

The restraint of Israel under attack is astounding. Colonel Richard Kemp, previous Commander of British Armed Forces in Afghanistan said when presenting his report to the United Nations Human Rights Council in October 2009: “During its operation in Gaza, the Israeli Defence Forces did more to safeguard the rights of civilians in a combat zone than any other army in the history of warfare.” (source)

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said to the US Congress last week: "Of the 300 million Arabs in the Middle East and North Africa, only Israel's Arab citizens enjoy real democratic rights. I want you to stop for a second and think about that. Of those 300 million Arabs, less than one half of 1% are truly free, and they're all citizens of Israel! This startling fact reveals a basic truth: Israel is not what is wrong about the Middle East; Israel is what is right about the Middle East!" (source)

Lastly, the Palestinian Authority President, Mahmoud Abbas stated this past Saturday that the future state of Palestine will be “free of Jews.” (source)

The State of Israel offers equal freedom for all its citizens, Jew, Arab, and Christian alike, including full parliamentary and judiciary representation. The State of Israel is the unchallenged leader of democracy in the Middle East, and the West Dunbartonshire Council boycott unfortunately attempts to undermine the very success of Israel as a democracy.

Therefore, it saddens me to have to inform you that the global counter-boycott of Scottish whisky products, distilled in the West Durbanshire Council region, is beginning. I don’t know anyone who bears malice toward these fine distilleries. When, however, your local council representatives boycott my country, under the most unethical and immoral of pretext, you cannot expect your market to sit idly and pretend your are not perverting justice.

• The counter-boycott is on the purchase of Scottish Whisky, distilled in the West Durbanshire council region.
• The counter-boycott is not retroactive and applies only to purchases made from June 2011 onwards.
• The counter-boycott will not prevented global residents from purchasing whisky products, distilled outside of West Dunbartonshire.
• Attempts to depict this counter-boycott as racist are also entirely inaccurate. The counter-boycott is instigated in response to conduct and boycott initiated by the West Durbanshire Council and applies to no specific ethnic or religious group. This is in direct opposition to the West Durbanshire Council which refuses to condemn the actions of Palestinian terrorists targeting Israeli civilians and the anti-Semitic, racist declarations of the Palestinian Authority, which calls for a “Jew-free” apartheid, State of Palestine.

The counter-boycott is publicizing the list of West Durbanshire distilled whisky by internet and distributing press releases to news agencies and others around the globe.

I just love San Francisco when everything goes right. Such as when the radical mobs can't find their way to the top of a very visible hill in the middle of the city.

Their remarkable absence undoubtedly contributed to a lovely evening for the Aipac supporters at the Fairmont last night.

Talking a long walk last night around the perimeter, I barely even needed my umbrella.
And I didn't have to use my pepperspray at all.
So I'm calling it a victory.

SEVEN FRILLIE-WILLIES IN THE KLINK!

The Aipac event in Oakland on Monday was a bit more exciting. Some sad pookie dancers from Codepink stubbornly twirled and stumbled a bit in the lobby of the hotel, before being arrested for horrid taste and disrepu.,..., I mean disruptive behavior. They subsequently spent several hours in lockup.
That should have given them enough time to think about what they had done, but we're talking about ideological cripples, so it probably didn't help.

As a direct result they will evermore refuse to eat Bologna.
Sandwich meats everywhere can breathe a sigh of relief.

I'm not kidding, they blamed Bologna for something too!

The next time I see ms. Gene St. Onge, I'll probably wave a few slices of Bologna at her. To remind her of the wonderful time she had on Monday night.

Secrets of Fusion Cuisine revealed!

According to many hip white professionals (you know, 'those people'), the best thing since wash-and-wear is 'fusion cuisine'.
What that means is white people cooking, using one or two Asian ideas or Ingredients.
If they do it in a restaurant context it costs three to five times more than if a little yellow person did the same darn thing. Or used one or two Caucasian Ideas or Ingredients.

Strange how that works – you can get stuffed at a "Chinese Restaurant" for less than twenty bucks (and leave only a one dollar tip, "because any more shows what a freier you are"), or get disappointed and dyspeptic at a fancy NOUVEAU place for sixty bucks.
And be sure to leave a 25% gratuity or "they WILL remember you next time!"

But, thanks to me, you don’t need to spend $75.00 at the fancy nouveau place (drinks not included), OR put up with snarky Cantonese wait-staff! Weeeee!

How lucky can you get!?!

Meaning that my mom pulled up her nose at what I had for breakfast.
It was far too 'white'. I’ve gone all native on her. Never gonna catch a decent man now.

Spam. And Egg. And Dried Mushroom. And Fish. And Thai Green Curry paste. And Tomato Paste. With Clarified Broth. Over Rice Stick Noodles. And Bean-thread Noodles.
With chopped green onion and cilantro. And Mexican pickled jalapenos. And some avocado slices.

Basically a soupy green curry noodle dish with savory bits and breakfasty things.
But really, if you don’t overdo the spam and egg, which were just an afterthought, much like dumping a fried egg on everything including steak and cake (and that’s VERY white!), it was really truly Asian.

So I don’t know WHY she called me ho chee quaimuy kam?

After all, I ate it with chopsticks!

She’s the woman who dumps a fried egg on her hamburger and rice, plus a big sploop of ketchup and Tabasco. And then eats it with a knife and fork!
So she’s very MUCH more white than I am.
I’m about as traditional and old-fashioned as they come. REALLY!

Next kitchen experiment

My auntie made a lovely dish the other day for dinner. I don’t know where she got the idea, it was the first time I’ve ever had it. But it was SOOOOO good! I’m really going to have to try to make it myself.

Shredded dried mushroom with pressed tofu!

Drumroll, please, I know you're impressed! So simple!

The tofu was still soft, but the mushroom shreds were crispy-chewy.
I think she dredged them in cornflour with salt and pepper, then deep fried them crispy before saucing them with garlic, ginger, oyster sauce, sugar, and Chekiang vinegar. A little hot chilipaste for zing, and then the pressed tofu added.
Minced green onion for a flash of bright color.

It was very good! I guess the tofu was added for contrast, but also when you think about it that there really isn’t much nutrition in dried black mushrooms – they’re mostly all about dense texture and flavor. Food, but not food.
Dinner was vegetarian, ‘cause auntie Ling really thinks it’s better for the soul to avoid meat.
Unlike uncle Willem and uncle Karel, she’s not a Calvinist. More like uncle Benedict – a freethinking skeptic and doubting Thomas.
Which is actually much nicer. Easier to get along with.
I don’t think Calvinists can even be vegetarian. Pity they can’t cook better.

When I make it, I'll add twice as much chili paste.

Last night, up to a dozen members of San Francisco Voice for Israel/StandWithUs, a right-wing Israeli advocacy group with a documented track record of aggressively taunting and intimidating grassroots peace activists, attended a Bay Area Jewish Voice for Peace community meeting at a South Berkeley Senior Center with the intention of disrupting, intimidating and possibly assaulting Jewish Voice for Peace members.

[If Jesse at JVP wrote this, Jesse and the truth parted company a long time ago. Well, so did Rae and Matthew (a compulsive whiner and, reputedly, a neurotic praeputiophile - I'll let you guess who is which). Altogether not surprising.
And from what I've heard, this had nothing to do with San Francisco Voice for Israel/StandWithUs, but comprised instead the spontaneous reactions of individual East-Bay Israel supporters and Jews, outraged at the horsepucky that JVP was 'voicing'. There is absolutely nothing to indicate that any organization OTHER than JVP was involved.]

Jewish Voice for Peace is the largest U.S. Jewish peace group dedicated to a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on democracy and full equality --- the Bay Area chapter is the founding chapter of the organization.

[Note: The Bay Area Chapter of JVP includes many people who have openly advocated the destruction of Israel. As they have made clear outside the consulate, and at United Nations Plaza, at several events in the past.]

Approximately 50 to 60 people were at the meeting, and numerous witnesses are available to corroborate the events.

Wrapped in an Israeli flag, San Francisco Voice for Israel/StandWithUs (SFVI/SWU) member [CUT] pepper-sprayed two JVP members in the eyes and face after they attempted to nonviolently block her ability to aggressively videotape the faces of JVP meeting attendees against their will.
The members, Alexei Folger and Glen Hauer, were careful to make no physical contact with her or her camera prior to the attack.

JVP had earlier this year filed a police report about a June SFVI/SWU protest at which JVP and (peace group) Women in Black members were intimidatingly videotaped and threatened by a StandWithUs supporter after being taunted with chants like “Nazi, Nazi, Nazi” or “Kapo,Kapo,Kapo”.

Caught on a widely seen videotape was a SFVI/SWU supporter pointing his camera to the faces of silent peace vigil participants while saying “You’re all being identified, every last one of you…we will find out where you live. We’re going to make your lives difficult. We will disrupt your families…”

For that reason, JVP members were particularly concerned about protecting the safety of meeting attendees and preventing the videotaping.

In case you were wondering, the Arabic slogans given above mean "with our souls and our blood we will redeem you oh Palestine" (ba rooh, ba dam, nafdeek ya Falasteen), "kill the Jews" (itbach al Yahood), and "Palestine is our country and the Jews are our dogs" (falasteen baladna wa'l Yahood kalabna). A promise of violence and bloodletting, an outright incitement to hatred and murder, and slogan that would make the KKK proud respectively.
Nice. JVP and their henchpigs have stood with folks screaming this crap, positively beaming with pride in their delicious revolutionary brotherhood.

If I ever see any of the JVP members or their friends at, or near, my high-school, I'm calling the cops. Too many of them have "other" track records as well.
They're not so young, they're hardly Jewish, and what the heck they have to proud of is a complete mystery. Some of them are 'persons of interest'.

Boys, Sewers, and Algae - Yay!

In hot weather, such as we're having this week, boys really stand out. By smelling phenomenally bad. I guess it’s just hormones, as between twelve and retirement age they’re just full of those things.
The hormones aren’t the problem, however. Most boys are needy.

Almost every boy I know seems to be emotionally furklempt. They want attention, they crave comforting, their sensitive wide eyes follow you around the room……

No, I’m NOT going to comment on the emotional problems of a fellow blogger. Even though he’s clearly indicated in the past that someone like me is just what the doctor ordered. Sorry, so very much NOT going there.

Middle aged old geezers are, in many ways, too much like other teenage boys. The only advantage of older men is that they don’t need help with their homework. Though sometimes I doubt even that.

INSTEAD, MORE MOONCAKES!

It's that time of year when boys smell particularly atrocious, because of the hot weather, the city streets reek of boiling old sewer systems, the refuse in the bins behind restaurants starts letting off an eerie glow, and the overheated waters of the Bay send forth potent perfumes of dying algae..... and when we celebrate the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival and eat mooncakes.

A very good time of year - despite the boys..... and the old sewer systems..... the glows.... the algae.....

Now guess what! Starbucks produces their own mooncakes! I may have to cast aside my undying loyalty to Peet's, even if just only temporarily.

Look, I can't stand Starbucks! It's always filled with galumphing waspy types with sneers in their voices, getting a jolt of really mediocre caffeine before heading to their oh-so important office jobs or yoga classes. Peet's has real coffee, even though most of the baristas show off tattoos in places their moms wish they wouldn't. But the coffee is real, and very good.

It's just that Peet's doesn't have mooncakes! In a city filled with high-strung energetic Asian teenagers, you'd think they would know - mooncakes are essential. There's nearly a quarter of a million Chinese in San Francisco, guys, don't you WANT us to throw our money at you? Aren't WE the SF target demographic of choice? Are you that set on catering to Whitey? In this city?

Yep, that's the message you are sending at this time of year.
It may be unintentional - like boys sweating and stinking all kinds of bad - but it is definitely out there. It had better be unintentional.

Europeans upset at exclusion

The Europeans are peeved that there is no room for them at the table. They, too, wish to be involved in the United States backed talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

There is in fact scant reason to include them. They were not particularly helpful the last time Israel and the Palestinians talked - and much has changed since then.

For one thing, the continent that invented the most virulent historic forms of anti-Semitism has since then perfected a post-WWII variant, and succeeded in making it respectable again. Even more than respectable - salonfähig.

"Not only is the EU a ‘top contributor’ to the Palestinian Authority, it also finances numerous non-governmental organizations in Israel whose primary function seems to be to delegitimize or even destabilize the Jewish state."

The cited statement above, from FresnoZionism, diplomatically points to the major problem with adding the Europeans to the table: they aren't neutral.

Not only are the Europeans not neutral, but they aren't capable of being equitable. They never have been. The British certainly have always favored the Arabs, the Swedes have a major problem with anti-Semitic acts committed by their Muslims and praised by their socialists and their newspapers, the Dutch, Belgians, and Danes have substantial far-left anti-Israel movements, the French, Spanish, Germans, and Italians have rabid Israel-haters in their universities and political parties.......

Europe invented virulent anti-Semitism, and in the past few decades they have re-invented it.
Israel's opponents would want them at the table. Rational parties to the negotiations should not want them there under any circumstance. They've made enough trouble already.

Mosque bigotry and racism

Opposition to the mosque at 51 Park (colloquially known as 'The Ground Zero Mosque') may qualify you for the title of 'bigot'. In this you will not be alone - several million 'nice white people of limited literacy' in this wonderful nation join you! Yes! You too are an ethnic group ("nice white people of limited literacy"), and you should probably go somewhere and form your own country. I suggest Alaska.

WHITE PEOPLE OF LIMITED LITERACY

At the risk of beating a dead horse: the damn thing isn't ON ground zero but at least two blocks away, it isn't a mosque but more a Muslim version of a JCC or YMCA, it isn't a training ground for terrorists or even funded by or for terrorists, it isn't a symbol of triumph to have a building significantly shorter than many nearby buildings, the term Cordoba indeed echoes a once-great Muslim city but ALSO the loss of that city and the final defeat of Muslims in Spain (followed by their expulsion and permanent erasure as a political group in Iberia), and, most importantly, Glen Beck, Geert Wilders, Pamela Geller, and several others spearheading the opposition to the mosque are blatant racists.

The opposition by the most repulsive elements of American society to Cordoba House have transformed what was once not a particularly good idea into an absolute imperative. That 'mosque' must be built, there is no choice; if it isn't, evil will have won.
Preventing the building of Cordoba House will mark the failure of American civilization, and the triumph of tyranny.

I am not fond of Islam. Even less am I fond of ignorance and bullyism.
I therefore must support Cordoba House. There is no other choice.

I don't cotton to mosques, I dislike Islam, and the entire Middle-East outside of Israel looks from this distance as a place of perpetual bloodshed and barbarism.
But many ancient mosques are incredibly beautiful pieces of architecture, often at the heart of universities and hospitals that flourished when Europe was still a bloody mudpit filled with wallah-wallah shouting savages and democracy hadn't even been invented yet, and many modern mosques serve EXACTLY the same function for their mukim ("parish") as churches: social center, bingo hall, and the charitable heart of a community.

I don't like churches either, but there are already tons of those - this country is OVERWHELMINGLY Christian. Those folks need a place to go.

So do Muslims. Who are barely a few million in the US. Not a significant percentage of the population, except, nota bene, in the area where Cordoba House will be built. And even there they are small fish in a large pond.

FEAR OF ISLAM

Maybe those who oppose Cordoba House/Park 51 are scared of Islam?

Perhaps Islam's conversion by conquest of so much of North Africa and the Near-East is cause for their alarm.......

The Catholics were far worse in South America, the Protestants raped much of Asia.
As a "heathen Chinee", I for one cannot look at the many churches in San Francisco with anything other than distaste.
The Japanese took one look at the Europeans and their warlike Christian activities and decided to keep the entire lot out for centuries (well, other than the Dutch - harsh Calvinists, but convinced that Asians were not worth "saving", and therefore mostly harmless).

The United States, motivated by the purest of Protestant motives, invaded the Philippines and destroyed their nascent independence movement, in order to make "our little brown brothers" ready for Christianity. They conveniently overlooked the stalwart fire and sword conversionary activities of the Spanish, who spent three centuries christianizing the natives with rape, slavery, extortion, and brutality - very successfully too, I might add.
The American forces during the war that followed managed to cause the deaths of nearly twenty percent of the Philippino population (almost all of whom were Christian).
A famous Protestant victory!

By the way, those 'harmless' Dutch Calvinists savagely butchered Balinese (Hindus), Acehnese (Muslims), Dayaks (animists), and Jakarta Chinese (Buddhists), while energetically furthering the noble cause of their Calvinist bulwark against the Spanish (Catholics) and Portuguese (allegedly also Christians of some sort).
Oh, and they also killed many Spanish and Portuguese while they were at it.

What both Catholic and Protestant nations did to the people of Africa cannot even be mentioned, as I'm trying to run a clean blog here.

How the Europeans behaved towards each other during the fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth century during their near-endless religious wars somewhat dwarfs what the Muslims did anywhere.
Several centuries of savage internecine slaughter, in between rapes. For very nice and thoroughly Christian motives, by very nice and thoroughly Christian people.

Surely the world should fear Christianity, in all of its myriad militant forms, much more than a bunch of kabob-selling immigrants who wish to have a social center and place to nourish the spirit in the largest, most cosmopolitan, and most diverse city in the world?

If we cannot defend the rights of even that group of immigrants - especially their right to practice their religion peacefully, in an American context - then all of us are at risk.
Not only those of us who are your "little brown brothers" - also you whites.

Hitler was Jewish

I wanted to call this post "Why I have the same butt-size as my cousin, which is why I borrowed her panties today". But I didn't, for two reasons: ONE is my panties are not something you should really be concerned with (it isn't about my panties), and TWO, this post isn't really about that but about haplotypes, genetic fragments, and fractions.

It's also about the recent news item that Adolf Hitler shared some genetic markers with Ashkenazi Jews, North Africans, and some very dark people indeed. The key word is E1b1b.

Fortunately I know about Gregor Mendel.

Which meant that I ended up reading about haplotypes.

Haploploploplooooo....

Actually, Hitler had dna which showed ancestry in common with most of South-Western Europe and North Africa. The haplogroup in question is a variant on E1b1b, shared by many Arabs, Africans, and Ashkenazi Jews, as well as Frenchmen, Spaniards, Southern Italians, and some Germans. It is passed from father to son, and remains constant no matter how distant the ancestry - so really, it doesn't mean much. After ten generations (a mere three hundred years or so), there's less than one thousandth part of an ancestor in the descendant, after twenty generations, less than a millionth. Now imagine that the haplotype entered his ancestry during Roman times, and you will see that for all intents and purposes, there was almost nothing Jewish (or Berber, or Sudanese, etcetera) about him.

The point is, he probably shared ancestry with Genghiz Khan and Niall of the Nine Hostages as well. As do a majority of modern ethnic Europeans.

Was there anything actually Jewish about him other than a minute and rather unimportant genetic fragment? Maybe. Maybe no.

It's all about recessive genes versus dominant genes, basically, which also applies also to behaviour patterns based on instinctive tendencies. So a hobby or tic which has a deep-seated cause may crop up in variations over a number of generations, leading to what look like shared behaviours among a group. Like collecting glittery things by magpies, or a preference for certain types of trees by beaver populations.
Mutations are usually subtle, and can only be mapped over a span of several generations. So some characteristics will, even over a thousand years, remain constant - ever wonder WHY everyone says all of us Chinese look alike?
Within the same general gene pool (ie, a settled population group), a number of multi-gene interactions will frequently recurr, over several generations and among numerous individuals. And even traits which appear identical in their discernable manifestations may not be the same on a genetic level. So there are multiple variables to take into account, a number of which may be repetitive among a narrow spectrum of people who are of similar origin and share bloodlines.

To put it differently, I can tell who is 100% Toishanese or Hakka, because their facial types AND many of their unconscious patterns are so similar - even if they do not speak Toishanese or Hakka and have been several generations removed from Canton. But children of interracial marriages may after less than two generations no longer even look Asian. After four or five generations, the difference from Toishanese type is almost completely stable.

So, if there was anything 'Jewish' about herr Hitler, it was no more than what several hundred million people also share. In his case, we think he walked upright. More than that we cannot say.
By that measure we are all Jewish.

Wow! I am not at all clear how they would obtain that milk, nor how it would avoid illicit mixing.
I rather think that it would promote exactly what it sought to discourage.

The proper Muslim way to partake of a woman's breast milk is to extend a tube with a nipple-cup to the relevant breast. In order to maintain propriety, the tube should be at least six feet long, bent once horizontally (either to the left or to the right), and twice vertically - thus the man would NOT be able to look directly at the relevant breast.

There should be three parts to the tube: a non-suggestive mouthpiece, a semi-rigid tube, and a nipple-cup.

The nipple-cup should be of generous dimension, and made of rubber or cured camel-hide, so that it is soft and loose enough to not betray either the moment of contact, OR the density of the breast, NOR even the general shape, contour, outline, density, sponginess, surface texture or skin tension, OR any other imaginable dimension or measurement.

Two beautiful blue bowls

A relative went down to the Palo Alto Clay and Glass Fair during the weekend, and came back with some bowls by Dick Lumaghi that appear to be pale Jun glazes, but no copper.
Or possibly rutile (segar) blues.
But I'm just guessing.

For those not in the know, Jun (鈞) glazes consist of at least three or four color influences.

[Jun glazes are so called after Jun-yao (鈞窯) ware, a type of celadon made during Sung, Chin, Yuan, and early Ming. The effects of the glaze are achieved by planned variance in firing temperature.]

Opalescence
This is caused by a separation in the molten glaze that can only occur at temperatures below 1200 and while the glaze is viscous. So it cannot occur in most kilns.. The kilns in China that produce Jun ware are heated up over a period of days, then gradually cooled down over several more days, allowing the opalescence to occur in the glaze. This can only result if the temperature is right for a long time.

Streaks
These are caused by the inclusion of Wollastonite. The melting point is 1,540˚C.
Wollastonite is an impure limestone naturally compressed in the presence of silica-bearing fluids. It often contains traces of irons, magnesium, and manganese. Most Wollastonite comes from China, although it is also mined in Gouverneur, New York.
In ceramic, the crystalline structure of the material causes a streak effect between glassy and pearlescent.

Blue blue green
Like Celadon, the glaze material contains iron, which gives it a blue or blue-green effect. Iron oxide, reduction firing.

Additionally, many Jun glazes ALSO contain some copper, which results in purple hues.

What makes me think that the glazes on Dick Lumaghi's pieces is Jun style is that there is more body to the bowls. These do not feel as fine-paste porcelain, but more robust. Very much like high-fired stoneware. They have a well-chosen heft to them.

They are delightful "plant your face here and eat" bowls.
Perfect for chopstick meals.

In a stinging rebuke of the hypocrits on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, Sentinel founder Pat Murphy writes:
"No one can hurt you as deeply as your friends, no one can hurt you as much as those you admired and trusted"

This was concerning a viciously unbalanced anti-Israel resolution that two supervisors tried to ram through and get adopted.

Their pompous and outrageous stance would have made an international fool out of San Francisco.
Our city deserves better than San Francisco Supervisors Sophie Maxwell and John Avalos.

Strictly speaking, that last assertion isn't true at all. I know plenty of perverts. Almost all schoolboys qualify, and so do most adult men. San Francisco is a hospitable environment for twisted sexualities of all kinds.
Half of the population is male. There's your statistical sample right there.

I just haven't met any Jewish perverts yet - there aren't enough Jews in SF to render them common.

The most dangerous phrase around the school playground is “come here little girl, would you like some candy?”
From what I’ve heard, however, it was a rather old fashioned lure.

My uncle Benedict recently offered me his precious pot, on "certain" conditions .........

What he will give me, if I do so, is a lovely Yee-heng teapot (宜興茶壺 or 紫砂茶壺 Yee-heng/Tzee-sa tsa woo), circa Haam Fung Emperor (咸豐帝 1831 – 1861).
It is shaped like a little round pumpkin, with vine and leaves decorating the outside, a thick twisted branch forming the handle, another forming the spout. It is exceeeeeeeedingly desirable! The fragrance of generations of use adheres to it, a faint perfume wafts from the inside, and the outside is speckled and brindled from years of tea cascading down the sides at secondary filling.

[Gungfoo tsa (工夫茶 kungfu Tea): A small teapot is filled more than half full of prize leaves. Hot water (not boiling!!!) is poured in to overflowing, the lid is put on, after scarcely half a minute the water is poured out; this is the rinsing of the leaves.
Then more hot water is added, again to oveflowing, and after a minute decanted into tiny cups, or, if you are alone, a shallow bowl, and drunk. Each subsequent steeping is longer, and has a different flavor. With Oolong (烏龍)or Woo-Yee (武夷) style teas, up to six steepings can be had. For solitary use, an even smaller pot than normal is best - you will nevertheless end up zipped to the tits and reading till three in the morning. It is very delicious.
Snobs and Taiwanese make a very big hoopla over it. The teapot, after years of use, acquires flavor and patina. Uncle Benedict has several small pots, in various shapes. I like it with Lok On (六安茶) style leaves from Kwantung.]

I've loved this pot since I was five.

OUTRAGEOUS PAKISTANI TREACHERY

A report has been published that squarely assigns blame for the imbroglio in Afghanistan on the Pakistanis. This should come as no surprise to anyone who has studied Pakistan's involvement in the Afghan mess - for over a generation the ISI and other Pakistani groups have been heavily involved in every foul deed in the region.

In other words, constant support from the Pakistani government, through its agencies, at multiple levels and from multiple departments, to many if not most facets of the Taliban organizational structure and to a number of Taliban actions and campaigns.
Plainly put: the Pakistanis are accessories to the deaths of American troops and American friends and allies - there is blood on Pakistan's hands.

At the very least, targeted assassination of Pakistani officials and members of parliament should be not only considered, but aggressively put into practice. If the world does not want another wave of terror and regional destabilization by those narco-vakils, Pakistan should be reduced to a less-than-third-world power. It would be no loss; they are already a dysfunctional society, and a pathetic excuse for a nation.

The war needs to be fought in Pakistan as well as Afghanistan. We have no allies there, only friends of convenience, saboteurs, and cowards.

CONDEMN ISRAEL - YET ANOTHER SAN FRANCISCO BOARD OF SUPERVISORS RESOLUTION

On June 9th, 2010, San Francisco City Supervisors John Avalos, David Campos, Chris Daly and Sophie Maxwell introduced a resolution savagely condemning Israel’s interdiction of the Gaza Flotilla, and calling for President Obama to work to end the "siege on Gaza".

It's up for a vote by the board next week:
Tuesday June 15th, 2PM - 4PM.

Meddling in international affairs is typical of San Francisco.
But if San Francisco is going to rampage all over the purview of the US State Department, surely the SF Board of Supervisors should be aware that there might be consequences?

As a future voter in David Chiu's district, I have an interest in seeing him do the right thing.

TURKS AND ARABS

The title of this blog post was specifically (and provocatively) chosen to attract the attention of search engines. I have been advised that the primary subject should occur in the title, in order to make it more visible.

Turkish food is far better than the mediocre slop that Arabs normally serve. That's still not enough to justify their existence, though. They are a nasty race.
Arabs, on the whole, have better manners than the Turks - except when they're in a foaming rage (rabies seems a frequent emotional state among them) - but that, too, like Turkish cuisine, is just not enough.

Both the Arabs and the Turks are perpetually involved in brutal crimes against women; many of those crimes involve Asian women. The Philippina housemaids in the Gulf and Lebanon are treated like slaves and frequently raped and brutalized, the Turks in Europe are heavily involved in selling unwilling women to brothels, and other aspects of the prostitution industry.
Both the Arabs and the Turks believe in honor killings, wife-beating, and pedophilia (often called 'marriage' in their part of the world).

Arabs and Turks have a fetish for blondes - I'm not sure whether that makes them stupid, rednecks, or just fetishists. It's rather creepy.
And it shows that they think lof women as nothing more than objects.

Atboth advises me to also use the word 'pestilential' in this post. I have now done so. Not as an explicit description of the Turks (and Arabs), but as an implicit quality.

When the flotilla of fools finally lands in Gaza, they will have a wealth of dining options to choose from. Among the many fine restaurants, I would most particularly suggest Roots. Steak au poivre, yum!

Over the course of several days I have been "discussing" the vandalism committed against rabbi Lerner in Berkeley with an anonymous commenter underneath a post by Ami Isseroff.

Everybody rightly condemns the vandalism - it was a cowardly act, and it's intent was to threaten someone for deeply held if totally berserk personal beliefs. In the United States you are allowed to believe whatever you wish, no matter how wrong, no matter how crazy - and several people indulge in that right.

Such as that particular commenter. Who proves himself very very wrong, and, quite possibly, crazy as a bedbug.

His most recent comment was to aver something ridiculous, and provide a link to an article supposedly backing that claim.

Besides being totally irrelevant, and having nothing at all to do with any of the issues in that comment string, that article actually proves entirely the opposite - Lerner to his credit justifiably calls Alice Walker to task for lying about rapes in the disputed territories.

Consequently, I have attempted to demonstrate to him (the commenter - assuming it's a 'him', as he is far too stupid to be a woman) that well, no, his assertion isn't borne out by the article to which he linked.

UC San Diego divestment - again!

The student community at UC San Diego is once again facing a divestment debate this evening, Wednesday May 5th.

The anti-Israel leadership has already started sending emails, letters, petitions, and propaganda campaigns to promote their mission for the sake of demonizing Israel on campus.

The anti-Israel group is calling for their supporters to show up in huge numbers. They are saying that "This historic resolution is a huge step forward for our cause."

Worries about the UC San Diego Divestment campaign

Thinking about college is not something I planned to do quite as yet, yet it is being thrust upon me. Living in California, naturally West-Coast universities are the most logical potential choices.

Except that they are less and less attractive.

UC Berkeley is out of the question – the atmosphere on the campus across the bay is so thoroughly hateful that it would be downright dangerous to go there unless one supported dictatorships like Venezuela, North Korea, and Iran.

San Francisco State, still reasonably affordable, is sodden with rabid anti-Americans and partisans of third-world gangsters, besides having had its courses severely reduced as well as its academic standards diminished.

Irvine and most of the other minor hinterland schools are also not on my short-list; I am neither fond of the farmbelt, nor of insulated campus communities. A pity, really. Life would be SO much easier if I just got along with those people. And those OTHER people.

[Concerning the California educational institutions in the bush, this from Arutz Sheva: "Many of the activities of these groups specifically harass and intimidate Jewish students," they write, and "it is not inconceivable that these groups' anti-Semitic discourse and hostility could escalate into incidents of physical violence. Nevertheless, California administrators have been unwilling to respond to, or even acknowledge, the threats that Jewish students face on their campuses."
If Jews are not safe, how much less so those of us who are clearly recognizable as urbanite ethnic? California does NOT a have a history ofkindly treatment of Chinese and Japanese, and some attitudes still thrive out in the Valley that are better restrained in the Bay Area. Now, I happen to get along with Jews. While absolutely loathing, and being filled with disgust by, the typical Arab attitudes towards little yellow women.]

And now, oh woe, San Diego is probably also out of the question.

Even though the ACUCSD president (Utsav Gupta) has come out in favor of a nay vote (“To this end, I will be voting against the passage of this resolution”), it does not seem likely that the issue will ever go away.
The slimy tactics of the SJP at Berkeley are becoming the role model for ideological anti-Semites up and down the state. Helped, of course, by such organizations as AlAwda, the AROC, ISM, and International ANSWER.

[Al-Awda opposes Israel's right to exist, supports foreign terrorist organizations such as Hamas and Hizbullah, organizes anti-Israel rallies and events, and features anti-Semitic speakers at its events. The AROC is funded by The Tides Foundation and serves as the outside agitator at many events in the Bay Area. The International Solidarity Movement (ISM) is a borderline still debatablylegal pro-Hamas and pro-Hezbollah partisan group with such stellar models of probity as Paul Larudee, Alice Walker, and Cynthia McKinney among its praise-singers, and International ANSWER are the rebranded Marxists and revolutionary anti-American arm-chair socialists who have sought to take over the left for nearly a decade, and largely succeeded. Do I also need to mention the Women in Black and Code Pink?]

I shall have to think the unthinkable. University, a few years from now, will be either in Massachusetts (two strong contenders), or New England (one).

Do they even HAVE decent Chinese food there?

Better eat all I can now. My late teens are going to be ghastly.

So another blogger thanked me very prettily for posting four links to his blog, then asked why I had chosen those particular four. I disabused him of the notion that it was because they are excellent pieces.

He's a decent if prolix writer, but those links had nothing to do with literary merit.
They were all tight little blinkered holes into the dark pit of his soul.
A smelly, reeky, smokey swamp of existential angst.

What happened is that back in December Snooky got a hold of an inane e-mail sent out by the American branch of Hamas ('US Campaign to end the Occupation'), who asked that everyone buy stock in Caterpillar and Motorola.

I'm so glad the the Berkeley Daily Planet has folded. Not that I would have needed to worry about the poison they spread for so long in Berkeley for several years (if I even end up at Berkeley), but it's nice to know that evil does not always end up on top. Sometimes it comes a deserved cropper.

As abundantly documented by the stalwarts at Daily Planet Watchdog, the editor of that newspaper, Becky O'Malley, waged an unmerciful hate campaign against Israel, Jews, and anyone who disagreed with her point of view about Israel and the Jews.

Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Nearly 62 years ago, the United Nations recognized the right of the Jews, an ancient people 3,500 years-old, to a state of their own in their ancestral homeland.
I stand here today as the Prime Minister of Israel, the Jewish state, and I speak to you on behalf of my country and my people.

The United Nations was founded after the carnage of World War II and the horrors of the Holocaust. It was charged with preventing the recurrence of such horrendous events. Nothing has undermined that central mission more than the systematic assault on the truth.

Yesterday the President of Iran stood at this very podium, spewing his latest anti-Semitic rants. Just a few days earlier, he again claimed that the Holocaust is a lie.
Last month, I went to a villa in a suburb of Berlin called Wannsee. There, on January 20, 1942, after a hearty meal, senior Nazi officials met and decided how to exterminate the Jewish people. The detailed minutes of that meeting have been preserved by successive German governments.

Here is a copy of those minutes, in which the Nazis issued precise instructions on how to carry out the extermination of the Jews. Is this a lie?

A day before I was in Wannsee, I was given in Berlin the original construction plans for the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Those plans are signed by Hitler’s deputy, Heinrich Himmler himself. Here is a copy of the plans for Auschwitz-Birkenau, where one million Jews were murdered. Is this too a lie?

This June, President Obama visited the Buchenwald concentration camp. Did President Obama pay tribute to a lie? And what of the Auschwitz survivors whose arms still bear the tattooed numbers branded on them by the Nazis? Are those tattoos a lie?

One-third of all Jews perished in the conflagration. Nearly every Jewish family was affected, including my own. My wife's grandparents, her father’s two sisters and three brothers, and all the aunts, uncles and cousins were all murdered by the Nazis. Is that also a lie?

Yesterday, the man who calls the Holocaust a lie spoke from this podium. To those who refused to come here and to those who left this room in protest, I commend you. You stood up for moral clarity and you brought honor to your countries.

But to those who gave this Holocaust-denier a hearing, I say on behalf of my people, the Jewish people, and decent people everywhere: Have you no shame? Have you no decency?

A mere six decades after the Holocaust, you give legitimacy to a man who denies that the murder of six million Jews took place and pledges to wipe out the Jewish state. What a disgrace! What a mockery of the charter of the United Nations!

Perhaps some of you think that this man and his odious regime threaten only the Jews. You're wrong. History has shown us time and again that what starts with attacks on the Jews eventually ends up engulfing many others.

This Iranian regime is fueled by an extreme fundamentalism that burst onto the world scene three decades ago after lying dormant for centuries.

In the past thirty years, this fanaticism has swept the globe with a murderous violence and cold-blooded impartiality in its choice of victims. It has callously slaughtered Moslems and Christians, Jews and Hindus, and many others. Though it is comprised of different offshoots, the adherents of this unforgiving creed seek to return humanity to medieval times. Wherever they can, they impose a backward regimented society where women, minorities, gays or anyone not deemed to be a true believer is brutally subjugated.

The struggle against this fanaticism does not pit faith against faith nor civilization against civilization. It pits civilization against barbarism, the 21st century against the 9th century, those who sanctify life against those who glorify death. The primitivism of the 9th century ought to be no match for the progress of the 21st century. The allure of freedom, the power of technology, the reach of communications should surely win the day.

Ultimately, the past cannot triumph over the future. And the future offers all nations magnificent bounties of hope. The pace of progress is growing exponentially. It took us centuries to get from the printing press to the telephone, decades to get from the telephone to the personal computer, and only a few years to get from the personal computer to the internet.

What seemed impossible a few years ago is already outdated, and we can scarcely fathom the changes that are yet to come.

We will crack the genetic code. We will cure the incurable. We will lengthen our lives. We will find a cheap alternative to fossil fuels and clean up the planet.

I am proud that my country Israel is at the forefront of these advances – by leading innovations in science and technology, medicine and biology, agriculture and water, energy and the environment. These innovations the world over offer humanity a sunlit future of unimagined promise.

But if the most primitive fanaticism can acquire the most deadly weapons, the march of history could be reversed for a time. And like the belated victory over the Nazis, the forces of progress and freedom will prevail only after a horrific toll of blood and fortune has been exacted from mankind.

That is why the greatest threat facing the world today is the marriage between religious fanaticism and the weapons of mass destruction, and the most urgent challenge facing this body is to prevent the tyrants of Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Are the member states of the United Nations up to that challenge? Will the international community confront a despotism that terrorizes its own people as they bravely stand up for freedom?
Will it take action against the dictators who stole an election in broad daylight and gunned down Iranian protesters who died in the streets choking in their own blood?

Will the international community thwart the world's most pernicious sponsors and practitioners of terrorism?

Above all, will the international community stop the terrorist regime of Iran from developing atomic weapons, thereby endangering the peace of the entire world?
The people of Iran are courageously standing up to this regime. People of goodwill around the world stand with them, as do the thousands who have been protesting outside this hall. Will the United Nations stand by their side?

Ladies and Gentlemen,
The jury is still out on the United Nations, and recent signs are not encouraging.

Rather than condemning the terrorists and their Iranian patrons, some here have condemned their victims. That is exactly what a recent UN report on Gaza did, falsely equating the terrorists with those they targeted.

For eight long years, Hamas fired from Gaza thousands of missiles, mortars and rockets on nearby Israeli cities. Year after year, as these missiles were deliberately hurled at our civilians, not a single UN resolution was passed condemning those criminal attacks.
We heard nothing – absolutely nothing – from the UN Human Rights Council, a misnamed institution if there ever was one.
In 2005, hoping to advance peace, Israel unilaterally withdrew from every inch of Gaza. It dismantled 21 settlements and uprooted over 8,000 Israelis.

We didn't get peace. Instead we got an Iranian backed terror base fifty miles from Tel Aviv. Life in Israeli towns and cities next to Gaza became a nightmare.

You see, the Hamas rocket attacks not only continued, they increased tenfold. Again, the UN was silent.
Finally, after eight years of this unremitting assault, Israel was finally forced to respond. But how should we have responded?

Well, there is only one example in history of thousands of rockets being fired on a country's civilian population. It happened when the Nazis rocketed British cities during World War II.

During that war, the allies leveled German cities, causing hundreds of thousands of casualties. Israel chose to respond differently. Faced with an enemy committing a double war crime of firing on civilians while hiding behind civilians – Israel sought to conduct surgical strikes against the rocket launchers.

That was no easy task because the terrorists were firing missiles from homes and schools, using mosques as weapons depots and ferreting explosives in ambulances.

Israel, by contrast, tried to minimize casualties by urging Palestinian civilians to vacate the targeted areas. We dropped countless flyers over their homes, sent thousands of text messages and called thousands of cell phones asking people to leave.

Never has a country gone to such extraordinary lengths to remove the enemy's civilian population from harm's way. Yet faced with such a clear case of aggressor and victim, who did the UN Human Rights Council decide to condemn? Israel.

A democracy legitimately defending itself against terror is morally hanged, drawn and quartered, and given an unfair trial to boot.
By these twisted standards, the UN Human Rights Council would have dragged Roosevelt and Churchill to the dock as war criminals. What a perversion of truth! What a perversion of justice!

Delegates of the United Nations,
Will you accept this farce? Because if you do, the United Nations would revert to its darkest days, when the worst violators of human rights sat in judgment against the law-abiding democracies, when Zionism was equated with racism and when an automatic majority could declare that the earth is flat.

If this body does not reject this report, it would send a message to terrorists everywhere: Terror pays; if you launch your attacks from densely populated areas, you will win immunity.
And in condemning Israel, this body would also deal a mortal blow to peace. Here's why. When Israel left Gaza, many hoped that the missile attacks would stop. Others believed that at the very least, Israel would have international legitimacy to exercise its right of self-defense.

What legitimacy? What self-defense?

The same UN that cheered Israel as it left Gaza and promised to back our right of self-defense now accuses us –my people, my country - of war crimes? And for what? For acting responsibly in self-defense. What a travesty!

Israel justly defended itself against terror. This biased and unjust report is a clear-cut test for all governments. Will you stand with Israel or will you stand with the terrorists?

We must know the answer to that question now. Now and not later. Because if Israel is again asked to take more risks for peace, we must know today that you will stand with us tomorrow.
Only if we have the confidence that we can defend ourselves can we take further risks for peace.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
All of Israel wants peace. Any time an Arab leader genuinely wanted peace with us, we made peace. We made peace with Egypt led by Anwar Sadat. We made peace with Jordan led by King Hussein.
And if the Palestinians truly want peace, I and my government, and the people of Israel, will make peace. But we want a genuine peace, a defensible peace, a permanent peace.
In 1947, this body voted to establish two states for two peoples – a Jewish state and an Arab state. The Jews accepted that resolution. The Arabs rejected it. We ask the Palestinians to finally do what they have refused to do for 62 years: Say yes to a Jewish state.

Just as we are asked to recognize a nation-state for the Palestinian people, the Palestinians must be asked to recognize the nation state of the Jewish people. The Jewish people are not foreign conquerors in the Land of Israel. This is the land of our forefathers.
Inscribed on the walls outside this building is the great Biblical vision of peace: "Nation shall not lift up sword against nation. They shall learn war no more." These words were spoken by the Jewish prophet Isaiah 2,800 years ago as he walked in my country, in my city - in the hills of Judea and in the streets of Jerusalem. We are not strangers to this land. It is our homeland.

As deeply connected as we are to this land, we recognize that the Palestinians also live there and want a home of their own. We want to live side by side with them, two free peoples living in peace, prosperity and dignity.

But we must have security. The Palestinians should have all the powers to govern themselves except those handful of powers that could endanger Israel.

That is why a Palestinian state must be effectively demilitarized. We don't want another Gaza, another Iranian backed terror base abutting Jerusalem and perched on the hills a few kilometers from Tel Aviv.
We want peace.

I believe such a peace can be achieved. But only if we roll back the forces of terror, led by Iran, that seek to destroy peace, eliminate Israel and overthrow the world order.
The question facing the international community is whether it is prepared to confront those forces or accommodate them.
Over seventy years ago, Winston Churchill lamented what he called the "confirmed unteachability of mankind," the unfortunate habit of civilized societies to sleep until danger nearly overtakes them.

Churchill bemoaned what he called the "want of foresight, the unwillingness to act when action will be simple and effective, the lack of clear thinking, the confusion of counsel until emergency comes, until self-preservation strikes its jarring gong."

I speak here today in the hope that Churchill's assessment of the "unteachability of mankind" is for once proven wrong.
I speak here today in the hope that we can learn from history -- that we can prevent danger in time.
In the spirit of the timeless words spoken to Joshua over 3,000 years ago, let us be strong and of good courage. Let us confront this peril, secure our future and, God willing, forge an enduring peace for generations to come.

Lolita - not enough sex, far too much Humbert

How dull, and how predictable. The ending of this book. Why did Nabokov have to end this with a morality tale? Humbert Humbert speaks of his motivations and realizations, and acknowledges that having depraved sex with a teenager was wrong wrong wrong!

He merits horrible punishment, he says, and advises Lolita to make the best of it with her husband. Dreadfully moral. Too good to be true. It makes a lie out of the man.

Again, Nabokov plays with mirrors. Humbert is sick within, Lolita's husband is damaged without. Humbert is a deviant, Quilty is depraved, Lolita is damaged, and her husband is relatively none of the above. I suppose exaggerating these differences makes them all somehow balance each other, just like all the coincidents and corollaries elsewhere in the book filled out a broader picture. The glib trickery of a febrile mind.

Still, it ends with Quilty dead, Humbert dying in the slammer. Poetic justice, huh!
He suggested, in chapter THIRTY SIX, that he deserves THIRTY FIVE years in jail. Dude, we've already been there! Thirty five chapters of your self-indulgent pedophile ramblings across America and across the pages and our patience!

"Light of my life, fire of my loins" - Hah! My donkey!!!

Couldn't you at least have admitted that you enjoyed every wet moment? That your visual tastes in girl-flesh made the fact that she was not a very interesting or romantic girl more than worth it? That the heat from her spare young body warmed those brittle old bones more than had you burned in the fires of hell? The Goldstone Commission report is a mockery of history. It fails to distinguish between the aggressor and a state exercising its right for self defense.

War itself is a crime. The aggressor is the criminal. The side exercising self-defense has no other alternative.

The Hamas terrorist organization has opened war and perpetrated other horrible crimes. For years, Hamas carried out attacks against the children of Israel, sending suicide bombers into city centers, injuring and killing civilians. They fired over 12,000 rockets and mortar shells at towns and villages with one clear aim - to kill innocent civilians.

The report legitimizes terrorist activity, the pursuit of murder and death. The report disregards the duty and right of self defense, held by every sovereign state as enshrined in the UN Charter.

Israel withdrew all of its troops and settlers from the Gaza Strip, opened the border crossings and actively supported its reconstruction. The Israeli presence in Gaza was terminated.

But after Israel completed its redeployment from Gaza, a murderous and illegitimate terror group violently revolted against the legitimate Fatah leadership, overthrowing it by force.

Hamas operatives murdered Fatah leaders, at times throwing them from rooftops in broad daylight.

While Hamas continued firing, Israel employed, time and time again, the diplomatic channels, including many appeals to the UN – in an attempt to bring about a cessation of rocket fire.

Israel redeployed and terminated its presence in Gaza. Hamas responded with incessant rocket fire aimed at killing children, women and innocent civilians. Instead of building Gaza and caring for the welfare of its citizens, Hamas built tunnels to attack Israel, cruelly using children and innocent Palestinians to hide terrorists and ammunition.

Hamas terrorists built rocket launching pads and storage facilities near schools, in mosques and kindergartens. They booby-trapped urban neighborhoods and used Palestinian children as human-shields in order to hide terrorists and war materiel.

The State of Israel was forced to defend itself. It acted out of obligation to its citizens, like any sister state in the family of nations would.

Israel has been criticized for its actions against Hezbollah attacks from Lebanon and Hamas attacks from the Gaza Strip, as well as for building the security barrier in the West Bank to prevent suicide bombers from entering the country.

This criticism did not stop the rockets from hitting the South and the North, nor did it stop terrorists from blowing themselves up in our central cities. IDF operations enabled economic prosperity in the West Bank, relieved southern Lebanese citizens from the terror of Hezbollah and have enabled Gazans to have normal lives again.

Those in pursuit of peace have justice on their side. Those who monger war will forever be criminals.

Members of the commission would have never compiled such a report if their children resided in Sderot and suffered the terrorism of daily rocket fire.

Oh no! Lolita has absconded!

Not with the crown jewels, but with Clare Quilty! The evil maniac "saved" her from her sickbed, leaving poor Humbert alone. And, as it turns out, frustrated.

So frustrated that he obsessively revisits the scnes of his crimes, hoping for clues. But of course there are none. After a period of intense and wildly loopy crisis, he has taken up with a woman who is mentally as childish as Lolita was physically, and together they drink like fish.
The two of them live in the hotels where he remembers fondling and worse Lolita, in bouts of intoxicating despair.

He is unmoored, Rita is unstable. This cannot endure.
It doesn't.

Rita and Humbert now no longer live together. But they seem closer now that they're apart.

Sofar, I don't think that Nabokov had a good sex life himself. His portrayals of women veer towards the either mentally featureless, or the physically undeveloped. Did he leave a lost love in Russia? Did he ever really connect with women? Was he an alcholic or very Greek?
Was that butterfly madness a substitute for the freshness that he sought?

And what's with all the ridiculous coincidences that are now cropping up? Are those replacements for the bad puns and convoluted word plays and theme-mirrors that earlier larded the text?

Charlotte Haze and her dishy daughter

He should've seen that coming - Lolita will undoubtedly grow up to be physically like her mom. At twelve she's already showing signs of a dulling of the curves due to plumpness. No, that only looks like baby fat.

Charlotte Haze almost raped poor Humbert earlier on in the book, but his innocent little Lolita, the unspoiled little angel, proved more "vestigal" virgin than 'vestal'.
She had it on with a lump at camp.

Nabokov doesn't really make clear why Lolita "seduced" Humbert. Perhaps she simply wanted to get it over with, but more likely she though of it as a way of getting her hooks into the man. He proves a willing victim. Overkill. The merest of hooks would've been more than enough.

She's cunning. Knowing in one sense, but she doesn't really know. She is simply showing off her superficial awareness of a new party trick to an appreciative adult.

Of course, Charlotte's only hook for Humbert was her daughter, and though enormously strong, it wasn't enough. Charlotte never caught Humbert, he simply swam into the boat. She lost her grip, lost her life, and Humbert was still hooked.

They drive all over the country in Charlotte's car, heading further west. There's something twisted about using the dead mother's vehicle as the device that binds them together in perpetual shuddering motion. Especially as this is the second time they have done so - a journey to recapture her lost innocence, his lost enchantment.

She was never innocent (just rather ignorant), and he exchanges his glib cynical attitude for paranoia and disillusionment.
Things will happen soon. I sense an impeding gloom called Clare Quilty.

One third of the way in. So far, this is very European. Professor Humbert plays his old-world intellectual cards for all they're worth, the black widow, Mrs. Haze, oohs and melts and drips all over him, and Dolly Haze just flashes her sweaty adolescent attributes with studied innocence.

Humbert describes the appeal of the innocent-seeming girl in wildly over the top terms, almost as if he's writing filthy poetry. When Lolita speaks, it's dull and flat, like someone who hides everything inside of her, even though Humbert is the one who has to keep everything secret. Mrs. Haze is efusively dull, vibrantly boring.

Humbert sees curves where there aren't any, Charlotte Haze couldn't find anything curved on her own plump body if it came up and bit her in the guts.

I wonder if the name 'Beardsley School for Girls' is a deliberate reference to Aubrey Beardsley, whose ink-drawings are decadent and obscene, and often show prepubescent naked girls - except when they are filled with delicious big breasted harlots. Or odd sexless pudgy man-boys.
He was a man of Catholic sensibilities, so I'm sure he would've loved to have done the illustrated or manga version of Lolita.

Stuff about Michael Jackson has been on television for the last two months, reaching a crescendo yesterday when they finally buried him.

The news has been full of that man who kindapped a ten year old and raped her for eighteen years. Two solid weeks of sordidity.

So this past week, the local public televion station broadcast the 1962 version of Lolita, starring James Mason, Shelley Winters, Peter Sellers and Sue Lyon.

Perhaps after all the bad press, they decided that society needed a refresher course on how pedophilia is really supposed to be done. Or maybe they simply wanted to show the classy upscale version. Tweedy intellectuals seduce teenagers so much better, yes?

However.

Humbert! Humbert! Humbert! Humbert! Humbert! Humbert! Humbert!

Sue Lyon does NOT look like a twelve year old. Not unless bovine growth hormone was all over the dairy industry back in the sixties.
Humbert Humbert dithers and waffles, no guts whatsoever. Clare Quilty (Peter Sellers) is an extremely irritating man, you wish Humbert would just shoot him at the beginning, but nO!!!!!! he just allows the idiot to talk and talk and talk! Shelley Winters is a cow.
Lolita is a chip-eating coke drinking round bottomed slut. And there is no sex in the movie.

It's not very realistic.

But it is very entertaining.
I'm gonna read the book next.

Or maybe lobster. I like lobster and shrimp, so I was alright with the aroma that came in from the Bay. Fishy.

Somedays the air is moist with 'fishy'.

On Stockton Street between Pacific and Washington it is ALWAYS moist with 'fishy'. There are several stores there with live seafood and gawking tourists (those are NOT for sale, you can have them free!), and several more which specialize in dried intensified hoisien flavors, such things as gon pui (dried scallop 乾貝), ho si (dried oyster 蠔豉 or 蚝豉), ha mei (dried shrimp 蝦米). And many others.

These are all delicious added to food.

Dried shrimp are used for their sweet and savory flavor, not at all the same as fresh shrimp. Mostly in soups and braised dishes, as well as dimsum.
Both dried scallop and dried oyster are often used in rice soup and slow cooked dishes. Especially some vegetable dishes where a touch of 'fishy' is necessary. What you do is soak them in a little warm water till softened, then add them before closing the lid.

The best qualities can be expensive, but the difference is enormous. So it is worth it to buy top notch 'fishy'.
Ask the merchant if you are curious.

Fighting over a dead man

My uncle lent me a book to read. Funeral Games, by Mary Renault. Difficult. Mostly because of the names. One might think that names aren't THAT important, but these are all Greek.

I think that many of the people in this historical novel snuff it throughout the latter half of the book. Probably okay, as I am less vested in them than in their environment. This is like a whodunit in which one by one they go to the woodshed, and don't return.

The author doesn't like women - Alexander's wives Stateira and Roxanne are dull and conniving, vengefull and vicious. None of the other women in Alexander's life are pleasant either. They're bitches, bitches, just bitches.

At least his scheming generals and friends are fairly emotionally honest about their greed and their hunger for power, brutally honest. Their honesty destroys everything Alexander achieved.

The nicest and most likeable character is probably the one man who dominates the tale by not being there - he's been dead since the beginning. Because his friends, lovers, and soldiers have such intensity for him, they remain rather human, and the story stays gripping.

Mooncakes, yay!

I love mooncakes! Every year I can't wait till the mid-autumn festival rolls around, so that I can pig out on lots and lots of mooncakes. I really like the double yolk refined lotus seedpaste (雙黃白蓮蓉月餅 seung wong pak lien yong ywet beng) or the bean-paste (豆沙月餅 dow sa ywet beng) mooncakes, which can be found at Mee Mee (美美餅食公司) on Stockton, or at the Eastern Bakery (東亞餅家) on Grant.

The mid-autumn festival (中秋節 chong chau jit) is the fifteenth day of the eighth month, which is on October third. There's a whole lot of story about it and what it means. All you need to know is MOONCAKES!

Lotus seed is lotus seed - does it NEED an explanation?
Dow sa, (豆沙 "bean mud") is ground boiled azuki beans with sugar and oil used as a filling for pastries. If you're white you probably won't like it once it's been explained to you, so eat it before someone tells you what it is.
There's also Ng-yan (五仁 five nut-kernels: pumpkin seed, melon seed, sesame, almond, and walnuts or peanuts) which has chunks candied wintermelon (糖冬瓜 tong tung gwa) mixed in. But you have to like it, otherwise you wasted your dollars!

Chinkiness and tinsel

On beautiful sunny days in San Francisco the European tourists bloom. You can tell that they are European, as they look different. And smell different. Sometimes very different. And be different I mean something else.
It's probably all that walking they do. Busts out a sweat.

But, speaking of smelling different, I've often wondered if the tourists like Chinatown for its colorful quantness - overflowing garbage cans, colored lanterns, Chinky-winky decorations, plastic and tinsel Chinesey decorative touches, or merely for the fact that a large number of yellow people are in evidence.

Probably isn't the large number of yellow people in evidence - Daly city got the same, so does Mountain View. But NO BUGGERY TOURISTS!!!!!!!!!!!!! In fact, the Mountain View downtown area is almost entirely yellow people. Not even the guey low from the surrounding area go there much. It is far TOO Chinese.

But here in SF, we have just the right balance. Cute, colorful, exotic fripperies, plenty yellow people, and lotsa overflowing garbage cans (cause there are too many yellow people and not enough garbage men). So we get ALL the tourists. Who take pictures of the frip, the garbage, and the yellow.

Oh we are so lucky.

Smells like flowers

It is strange what happens when it is summer in San Francisco. The smells change. Many of the downtown streets, which normally smell of pee, now smell of sewers. And some of the Chinatown alleys smell of incense and garbage.
The further down hill, the worse the smell. Horrible.

There is an alley near my house that smells of moss and sweet flowers, because it is overgrown and too far uphill for the street people (we mustn't call them bums!) to come. And the beer-drinkers haven't discovered it either. It is very nice in the morning when the sun comes out, which is around ten or ten thirty, after the fog.

I do not want to go in there any other time, only when it is bright. It is scary at other times. Sometimes somebody is sleeping under the bushes there. But you can't smell him if you don't come too close. I think he probably has somewhere to shower. He must like the flowers, I hope.

On another blog I found mister Kimura - Kimura Sensei (木村先生) in Japanese. Mister Kimura is the teacher in an anime about seven girls going to a highschool in Japan. The anime is called Azumanga Daioh (あずまんが大王), meaning Azumanga 'great king'. Dai oh (大王) is the name of the magazine in which the manga on which the anime is based first showed up.
So the name of the anime is wrong, it should be Azu-anime Daioh (あずま アニメ 大王).

Also, Azumanga is a combination of the author's surname and the word manga (or anime). The author is Azuma (あずま or in Kanji: 東 but could also be written 吾妻) Kiyohiko (きよひこ or 清彦). He also drew Hentai manga and anime. Hentai means sexy or perverted. I have not seen any of those.
Azumanga Daioh is not about sex, and there is nothing depraved anywhere in it. Except for mister Kimura. Who isn't really depraved, being really rather innocent. And sweet. In an innocently sweet and totally pervy fashion.

The objects of his peculiar affections are the girl-students Kaori (かおり), also known as Kaorin, Ayumu Kasuga (春日歩, Kasuga Ayumu), who is nicknamed Osaka (大阪), Chiyo-chan (美浜ちよ, Mihama Chiyo), Tomo Takino (滝野智, Takino Tomo), Koyomi Mizuhara (水原暦, Mizuhara Koyomi), miss Sakaki (榊) , and Kagura (神楽) .
Mister Kimura is married. And myopic. His glasses make him seem a worse pervert than he probably is.

Kaori is sweet, short, and shy, and has a crush on Sakaki which is unrequited. Mister Kimura has a crush on Kaorin which is also unrequited. Thank god.

There are two other teachers, both female. Yukari-sensei (谷崎ゆかり, Tanizaki Yukari), the English teacher; Kurosawa-sensei (黒沢みなも, Kurosawa Minamo?), also known as Nyamo (にゃも) who teaches phys ed.
Yukari Sensei is not soundly based in the real world, or entirely emotionally stable. Nyamo is pleasant and po-faced.

The series is very amusing. Much of it is available on youtube, and Wikipedia has a lot to say about it too. That's where I found all the Kanji and stuff.

Bouganvillea

All along the streets of Nob Hill and Russian Hill the bouganvillea is in glorious color. Pinks and reds and purples, nice violent hues. It faces south. Bouganvillea only grows in south exposure.

These are very beautiful flowers, and there ought to be more of them in San Francisco. They make the summer seem special. I like to dawdle while walking home because I like being near them. So nice! Better than roses.

This morning I could smell the coffee roasting in North Beach when I woke up. Probably because it was moist in the air. All day has been cool because of it.

Plants seem greener at times like these. It is very nice.

The steamed black been buns at the Eastern Bakery are the best! If you've never had one, please go! Now!

The owners aren't related to me. They're name is 關. And I think they're 粵人, not 客家.
So no. Not family.
I have no interest, fiduciary or otherwise, in the flourishing of their enterprise.

I just love their black been buns (dow sa bao: 豆沙包). Their chicken buns (guy bow: 雞包) are also VERY DELICIOUS!

Um, I guess you might not know what I'm talking about, huh? Black been paste is sweet, a little like chocolate, but not very. A steamed bun is a comforting warm snack. Guy bow are steamed buns filled with chopped chicken, black mushroom, and a slice of pork sausage for good smell. Some people get weird and peel off the thin skin on the outside, but you can shove it into your face without bothering about that.
